Problem: This is a new one for you. Are you familiar with a Koran car manufacturer called "SAMYONG"? I am from the Philippines. In 1995, Mercedez Benz here in the Philippines released a Korean version of a utility van. The Model is MB 100D. It was abig hit! Until owners found out it was a lemon! Would you have information on this unit? And how do we request help in getting the proper way of securing warranties for damaghes which often occur during daily use? Is Daimler Benz worldwide aware of this move? Apparently, it was issued Only here in the Philippines. Please provide more info. My e-mail address is motion@info.com.ph My name is Leo A. Gueco

Problem: Our Mercedes Van is made in Korea and we bought the van without test driving it which I regret because I found out later that there is annoying sound on the transmission at all gears. I think this is a design problem because the ugly grinding sound is typical to other MB 100 vans like ours. I could not believe how Mercedes Bens allow the Korean manufacturer damaged his reputation by allowing this very poor quality van. Onother problem is the airconditioning compressor that failed pre-maturely. Our van is slightly used, only 20,000 KM and regularly maintained at the dealer where we bought it. This sad and expensive experience made me loss my respect to Mercedes Bens.

Problem: When its raining I can not open the windows, not even a bit, and if the car its been parked in the rain for a while, when I open any of the doors (it happens more often in the rear ones), water comes in like a waterfall, and my leather seats are getting ruined, I know that nowadays, nobody uses water gutters on top of the doors, but a different kind of rubber or an extra one stuck to the car could do, its cerntainly a big problem with not much solution

Problem: I just bought this car and have had a few new problems, as well as discovered a few unknown preexisting problems. I recently plugged a CD player into my lighter and tape deck. When I went to open the sunroof the power to the CD player (radio & lighter) stopped.I took the CD player out and now the sunroof won't open, the lighter won't work and niether will the blinkers. The radio stops when I try to open the sunroof, plug in the lighter or glove compartment. I have checked all the fuses and there is no problem there. Where should I start? What wire? Also the heater does not go off. It is constantly on and since I live in San Diego it can get prtty hot. I would appreciate any ideas as to how to handle this problem without going to a mechanic. Also, does anyone know of a good fix-it manual for the 190D 2,5 series? I have had a lot of trouble finding one. Please email me with any possible solutions.

Problem: First not a big problem, more of an annoyance! The fan belt started getting noisy and developed into quite a loud shrill. After inspection, the fan belt was relaced with a new one. No noise for about two months and then started again. A mechanic put a drpo or two of oil on the belt but this eliminated the noise for a week. (Also I do not want the belt to start slipping by adding any more.) Is ther eanything that can be done to eliminate this noise ?

Model: 190E Year: 1984 VIN:
Problem: I bought a 1984 MB 190E with 77,000 miles on it for $5,200. This was the first year of the 190 or Baby Benz, it has a 5 speed manual. The interior is tan with the MB texture vinyl seats. Since owning the car I have put 44,000 miles on it and the odometer reads 121,000 miles. I replaced the timing chain at 90,000, that $350 is well spent, since if the timing chain breaks it will be about $900 - $1200 to replace valves etc. I had new cap, plugs, battery, alternator, tie rods, power window regulators, wipers, etc replaced. I changed the oil every 3 to 5 thousand miles. The muffler even fell off, due to it not being tied down properly. All in all I put about $2700 into the car over the years and that comes out to about .0614 cents per mile! This is not that bad when you compare that with other cars it's not bad! The trick with owning a MB is finding a good independent mechanic that is an expert with MB, not one tha works on Hondas, Chevies, BMW, Fords etc. My mechanic will only work on Mercedes and frowns on BMWs and only works on japanese cars as a favor to his MB clients. Also buy used parts if possible, MB from Germany makes part that last a long time. Change the oil regularly and the engine repairs will be less. It seems that most of complaints could have been prevented with a little preventive maint. Even though I drive a cheap Mercedes, it always impressed people when I drive up and the car makes me feel like a Million, so for $5200 I think I got a hell of a bargain. What other used car can you pay $5,200 amd makes you feel like a Million! Parts and service is much better and easier to get in the U.S.A.

Problem: Car seems to use a lot of oil, but there is no blue smoke coming from the tailpipe or oil on the driveway. Have no idea where it is going, but I add two to three quarts every few weeks. Shop guy says he can't see any signs of oil leaks. Also, the rear end squeaks like crazy. The shop I use replaced some "links", but the squeaks are still there. It cost me $300 to replace one link, so I don't want to take it back to the shop until I know what's going on. The shop guy says there are four of these links. THat's $1200!Also, have had nothing but trouble with the Becker radio, so I had it replaced with a Sony. Before, I had to drive 80 miles to the nearest dealer to reset the codes (they did it for free in two minutes). But, it was aggravating and took a whole day just to get the radio working. When the tape player quit, that was it for the radio.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Have taken no action on oil "burning" problem since the car drives fine - just need to keep a few quarts in the trunk ready to use. Replaced and junked Becker radio. Links still squeak loudly.

Problem: Throughout the past year I have owned this car I have spent about 10,000 dollars on pointless repairs that quit working due to poor manufacturing. I have replaced controll arms, wheel barings, transmission, abs sensors, the rear main seal, as well as many numerous parts. The rear windows quit working for some reason not long after 100,000 miles. Now one of my rear windows will almost roll down. The center consoul has broken ( part with antena, sunroof, rear defrost. buttons ) and now i cannot use my antena. The engine makes a very anoying clanking sound that would cost me 2,000 dollars to just get it looked over. This car handles very poorly, controll is lost very easily. 0-40 speed is horrible, 40-80 speed is very quick for a 4 cylinder, 80-130 speed is horrible. This car will last forever, you juts end up spending about the same price you would for a new mercedes in the end.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: If anyone wants to give me or sell me their center consoul then please e-mail me, thanks.

Problem: I am just about to purchase a 1987 16V, but after reading all these problems, I'm begining to re-consider. It's not so much the problems that bug me but the lack of precise diagnostics sounds very scary. Must be scary owning a car with a nagging problem which cannot be diagnosed or easily fixed. From my experience I would much prefer to know exactly what the problem is, no matter how expensive and thus be able to deal with the cost. Surprised that MB refused to assist so many customers, what a turn off !#@$!

Problem: Have owned several, along with many of my friends, and we all have had the following problems. If you are considering one of these on the used market, watch out for: --Malfunctioning cruise control. This is expensive to fix ($1000+), and no jobber parts are available. --Various electrical maladies. Including non-functioning power windows and sunroofs. Mostly linked to switches and poorly located wiring. About $300 per repair. --Oil being pushed out of air cleaner and filler openings. Dealer will diagnose as poor valve train and beat you up to the tune of $3500. Ouch! Most of the time the breather valve is clogged, and the engine is finding other places to breathe. My car had 190,000km on the clock, and still had good compression, but we had to service the breather twice a year. --Camshaft wear! Real bugaboo of all four cylinder 190E cars, worse on 1984-86, but prevalent on all. Means top end rebuild, usually before 125,000 km's. Expensive if done by dealer, reasonable elsewhere (3500-4000 dealer, 1000-1500 independant) All these cars are VERY sensitive to front wheel balance, and require constant alignments. If you use an eight wheel/ tire setup for winter use, do not stack your stored tires, as any deformation will cause vibration in the steering. Also for winter users: wash the underside religiously! These cars are generally good for rust protection, but the jacking points are very poor. Anyway, at less than $10K for a good example, they can be great used buys (someone is thoroughly enjoying mine), but like any used car, BE CAREFUL! Will report if any problems arise from me 1998 C230.

Problem: "Minor" service work at dealer a year ago. Totally screwed everything up. Exhaust fell off! Brake master cylinder tank was not affixed to the master cylinder (so I lost brakes), said they changed coolant but did not, overfilled the tranny by 3 quarts - thereby blowing out every seal in it (took the excess fluid out but wouldn't repair the blown seals). Failed to mout replacement tires on rims correctley (the idiots left the manufacturers sticker on the tire bead, it wouldn't seal, would go flat in 4 hours...."oh yes Mr. Customer, these advanced tires and rims take time to bead in..." Yea, sure. I really like Mercedes cars, but so far ALL of their dealerships that I have been to in the south west US treat you like crap and their service department managers couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel! I've owned Lotus, Porsche, BMW (several), Jags, Alfas, and have NEVER encountered such an arragant and incompetent dealer structure. Hell, my sister gets better treatment and work quality
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Talked to service manager about problems, got blown off. Talked to dealership manager, he walked away and said "if I don't like their service I can go elsewhere." Wrote detailed 5 page letter to Mercedes-Benz. Got no response. Called M/B, said they would call back. No Call. Tried again. Got through to Mercedes-Benz and complained about idiot dealer. Basically they said since I had an older car tough s**t there was NOTHING they could do!

Problem: Just recently, I was traveling down the road and all of a sudden the windshield fluid just started squirting out and the wind shield wipers on the front lights just went haywired. The only way it stopped was when the fluid ran out but you could still hear the motor running so I just took the fuse out. Later on, the windshield wipers just came on and eventually went off and came on again, but to stop it I had to take the fuse out as well. In addition, the right parking light or the left parking light will just come on and stay on. I took it to the shop but they really don't know what the problem is so they are now guessing. They are thinking that its the entire fuse box that needs replacing ($600). I wanted to know if you have heard anything similiar or if anybody else has had the same problem and how they resolved it without trying a lot of things. The problem has occurred again and now I have to take it back to the shop. Please help. Thanks, Sharon
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: I have taken it to the shop and they are guessing that it is the fuse box. They didn't fix it the first time because they fiddled with the fuse box and it stopped. They indicated that if it happened again then bring it back to replace the fuse box. So now I have to take it back and hopefully the fuse box is the real problem.

Problem: Purchased the car used with 185,000 miles on it. Found out that it leaked oil (c.a. 1 qt/tank of gas.) went on for 2 years this way then replaced the valves and head gasket ($1400)which took care of the problem. At 210,000 miles A/C went, but not worth rebuilding whole A/C system for $1500 I decided. At 200,000+ miles a squealing noise was noted, it was then engine belt tensioners (there are 2 or 3), when replaced the noise sotpped. They go within 2-3 months of each other, so do them all at once. At 230,000 miles loss of acceleration and stalling when slow to stop. The fuel injector/mixer assembly was found to have been hand repaired with screws and glue. Replacement took care of problem. At 190,000 leaking in cooling system found. Replacing water pump did not fix. There is a secondary loop that cooling fluid goes through to provide heat for car, leak is in this loop, probably at the switch/pump. Also if car engine overheats with A/C check cooling fans, these burn out at high mileage.

Hot weather is worse. I live in the desert of Southern California and my dealer is in Escondido. I like my dealer I just wish they would resolve the problem. I also have a problem with it consuming 3 - 4 quarts of oil between changes. Two quarts, I am told, is normal. The valve guides have been replaced twice. Most recently last week. Problem: I have two major problems, durind a cold start, the automobile struggles for more than 30 seconds to achieve a reasonable RPM level and achieve operating power. The MB dealer suggested a fuel additive to clean the injectors. I changed the fuel filter, added the concoction, and the same problem exists. He said that the gasoline may be the problem.??? THe other issue is the hard shift from 2 to 3rd. Again, the dealer checked all the servos, and lines, had a road test, and his diagnostic was that this is a common shift on this type of models. I should not worry about it. How can MB design a automobile that gives whiplash on a gear shift. I do not agree with the diagnostic. No one has been able to resolve the problem

Problem: I want to start off by saying thanks for many years of exceptional performance, service and quality. With much regret, I feel it necessary to write to you regarding a problem I've been experiencing with my 190 class Mercedes. About 2 weeks ago (Friday, July 18th); during a routine 15 thousand mile preventative maintenance check. My mechanic (with over 25 years of Mercedes/BMW experience) notified me of oil in my radiator fluid. This surprised me, due to the fact my Mercedes has only approximately 60,000 miles and feels like I just drove it from the showroom. Under the direction of my mechanic, I called Mercedes of North America Customer Service with this issue and for possible warranty assistance, and was directed to a dealer before any decision could be made. I made an appointment for Tuesday morning (July 22nd) with a dealer, Millenium Automotive Group (Bridgewater, NJ). The car was only serviced/diagnosed on the following Thursday (I was told that they were short of sta! ff - after the fact) - so much for service (why make an appointment when you do not have the staff to do the job). Then I was told that they were unable to diagnose the exact cause of the leak would not guarantee that it would not recur. They said that they would replace the cylinder head gasket and hoses for now and hope for the best at an estimated cost of US$1200. I was told that if the problem recurred, I would would have to replace cylinder head. At this point, I was told that Mr. Wes Simmons, thankfully suggested that Mercedes of North America would bear the cost of labor, gasket, and half the cost of a cylinder head should it recur. I was also told by the dealer that I would have to wait 4-5 days as they did not have parts (hoses). This surprised me since hoses had to be replaced no matter what the diagnosis and could have been ordered last Tuesday - so much for efficiency. I am still waiting for my car. The dealer commented that I probably was "Lax " in service, yet ! I had documented each 15,000 mile check up and most all oil services, and part replacement. I have agreed to pay out of pocket to resolve this issue, although I did want to verify if this was a known problem or just a fluke and bring to your attention the need to maintain customer retention. I have been browsing the internet and inquiring with various other mechanics. This gasket problem seems to happen pretty much regularly - though not at 60,000 miles. I assume that this information should be directed to manufacturing so as to improve quality. Customer Service has surprised me by indicating that no such 'known problems' are archived. Why? Please note that I have recently changed the Idler and Antenna that had gone bad. Also, I would be glad to fax you copy of all records in my posession. In closing, I would like to thank you again for many, many years of exceptional service (though not with the indirect responses). Anything you can do to help me understand this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Problem: I have just been informed by the dealer that there was a failure of the vacuum system as a result of trying to reassemble the cylinder head...so much for trained technicians. Is there any audit done of your various dealerships? Perhaps there should be an independent audit. I know of quite a few Mercedes owners who have had problems with this and other dealerships in New Jersey. At least one of them now services out of Whiteplains, NY even though it is a long way off. Another has stopped buying Mercedes. I don't see why customers have to go through this...what is the use of having a good product with lousy service? Problem: Front passenger seat is very uncomfortable. Regardless of seat position or position of passenger, I can feel the seat adjustment mechanisms located under the seat. It is uncomfortable on short trips (15-20minutes). Long trips are out of the question. I currently have a 1987 300TD, and previously owned a 240D. These are very comfortable cars. No one could be more surprised than me when I discovered how horrible the seat is in my new C230K

Resolution: Dealer has been sympathetic but can not offer any other solution other than for me to spend several thousands of dollars to buy-out the 7 month old lease and lease another automobile. This is not a viable option. They can not replace the seat with a better seat. I have call the CAC twice and as of this date no one from the regional office has contacted me about this problem.

Problem: I found your site by mistake, but boy are you right on the money. I will not buy a MBZ ever again. I went as far as writing to the company directly (no response), the dealer (they do not care), a complaint to the BBB (If you are not suing for money, they do not care), and to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. I sent this letter to all of them: "I have been a customer since I moved to the Bay Area in January of 1994. On November 25, 1996, I took my 1988 Mercedes-Benz model 260E for a brake job and smog check. Your representative called and informed me that my car did not pass the smog check and that a computer diagnostic was going to be performed to identify the problem. Later that day I was informed that my car needed a new valve job and the cost would be $2,500.00. Enclosed is a copy of the bill that shows the compression in each cylinder and that cylinder #5 was bad. Since I had a hard time believing that the car was in need of such repair (I have taken the car in for maintenance every 7500 miles as suggested by the manufacturer), I requested a copy of the test, but none was given to me! I declined the repair. Later that week I went to visit my father-in law who suggested a reputable smog place in Red Bluff, CA (Station # RL163696). After they verified that the car was not going to pass the smog test, they ran a computer test (the same test your repair shop performed) and determined that the fuel was burning at 160 degrees instead of 190 degrees. The technician determined that the problem was a faulty thermostat and the repair would cost about $90.00 parts and labor. After installing a new thermostat, the car passed the smog test (enclosed copy of test). I am wondering how it is possible for your service center to make such a big mistake. Your mechanics are certified by Mercedes-Benz (at least I would assume that) and for that you charge a premium for their hourly rate. I am sending a copy of this letter to Mercedes-Benz Customer Relations, California State Bureau of Automotive Repair and the local Better Business Bureau." In short, no one gives a d…

Problem: I too was fortunate to have stumbled on this site..Thanks!! My problem is that my 260E (125K miles)has the worst eratic shifting problems ever. At slow speeds it can range from a smooth shift to sharp jolts, to damn near giving whiplash! The local (Columbus) repair shops just say that it's the nature of the beast. I finally got ahold of a tech bulletin regarding "Erratic or harsh shifting" in the 260E. They said it may be the cap that goes on the shift modulator. Well, I bought the little cap and crwaled under my car only to find that not only dows my shift modulator not look much like the tech bulletin photo, but the part number for my transmission doesn't even match what my parts manual says it should be! If tried contacting MB via their website, but they offer no on-line tech assistance that I could find. Do they just not care? I'm sick of paying big bucks for bogus diagnostics that always return the same "unknown" results.... can anyone help me???

Problem: Mercedes Benz dealers in North America take a very crappy attitude toward those of us lucky few who own grey market cars. The 280TE was the wagon that MB SHOULD have sold in the states. Quiet, fast, with a WONDERFUL engine. I have not been able to find a dealer that will cooperate with my requests for parts. I have to use "covert" methods (ie: tell them I'm driving a 300TD or a 280E) to get the things that I need, and if they find out it's for a grey market car, they tell me that parts will be "un-returnable".

Problem: The engine cuts out on tickover. This only happens when engine is warm. The car is automatic and when engaged in the "D" or "R" position and I am trying to manoeuvre or park the car in a parking space, the engine will stall. When the engine is cold in the morning and I take the car for a short drive, it is perfect. It tends to stall after a journey of 30 miles or more when the engine is hot and especially in city driving, when I would approach traffic lights and may have to slow or stop the car sharply the engine will stall. It only occurs when car is moving slowly on tickover. If the engine is revved up or accelerated while in neutral it will stall. This does not happen when engine is cold. It drives perfect other than this problem and there is no loss of power while driving or accelerating.

Problem: My vehicle has just under 70,000 kilometers on it and there is an oil leak coming from the head gasket. It seems to leave a drop on the floor every time the car is parked.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Had a M-B repair facility inspect and confirm the leaky head gasket. They said they have heard of leaking head gaskets from the twin-cam motors, but only with higher mileage cars. They suggesting taking the vehicle back to the dealer for some recourse as they may fix it under a warranty for factory defects. I paid a visit to the dealer and presented my problem. They said they will look into it and if it is a problem with a defective head gasket, they will pay 10-15% of the repair bill ($1000+). Well, that's not good enough for me considering the low mileage, possible factory defect and the fact that it appears to affect other twin-cam models. I wonder if anyone else have experienced the same problem and their solution with dealing with Mercedes.

Resolution: The only problem was (I found and repaired myself)a partially frozen throttle linkage. One of the nylon bushings on top of the valve cover was the trouble. Operating the linkage by hand worked, not with the foot. It would only open about 2/3. Its amazing what grease will do.

Problem: At a certain rpm (in 4th gear at a speed of about 70 km/h) I get a jolting car. This behaviour can easy be eliminated by accelerating or decelerating (or by passing the 70 km/h frontier rather fast). The problem is well-known as the "bonanza-effect" but no one knows the reason of this behaviour. Everyone advises me to install another fuelpump but I can't live with such kind of blind solutions. I never mentioned any other problem (280.000 km by now)

Problem: I recently purchased this MB. It has 107,000 miles. Body is in excellent condition. Two minor oil leaks had to repaired at the transmission area. When the car was picked up and driven way, the transmission was in horrible condition. As the vehicle accelerated, the two different gear changes felt like the car had run over a large object in the roadway. The change in gear is like (two) tremendous jolts that is so abrupt that I think my fillings in my teeth are now loose. When I called the dealership to ask if anyone had test driven this car after the tranny was worked on to stop the minor leaks, the response was that two men had test driven it. Sounds to me like these two men should find another line of work. I must return the car to the dealership which is over one hour away. Until that happpens, I am almost embarrased and angry that I have to drive the MB this way.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: No action yet. I am suppose to bring the MB back for a transmission adjustment. Can't believe that the MB dealership would have aloud this vehicle to be released in this condition.

Problem: With car still under warranty a repair shop that has worked on 4 different Mercedes cars I have owned since 1977, using parts supplied by the local Mercedes dealership, replaced a damaged heater element at a cost of over $500.00. Letters to Montvale, N.J., and Germany headquarters resulted in refusals to honor the warranty. They claimed I should have taken the car to their dealership. Why, then, do they supply parts to qualified shops. Today the car still has less than the 45,000 miles allowed by the warranty. I am considering taking the case to court. I already counseled my daughter to buy a Lexus instead of a Mercedes, and will probably sell the two Mercedes I own.

Resolution: Best thing to do is use a peice of bailing wire and "saftey tie" them in thru the back side, it's kind of lame but it sure beats loseing them, or having the units fall out and beat against the side of your fenders while moving down the road.

Problem: This 300E was put in service Jan.8,1988. It has been in the family since new. It has 168,000 miles. The engine has never been touched for major service. The cam cover has never been off or the oil pan. It required a waterpump at 110,000 miles. And an alternator at 165,000 miles which MB replaced no charge, why ? It does not leak oil or burn oil. Unfortionatly we do have to renew brake components. It still has the original exhaust system. The shocks were replaced at 150,000 miles, not that they needed it, I just thought it was time. The transmission is still virgin. I must admit that it does cost me more money than most in oil and filters. I change at 3500 miles and I use the plain vanilla oil, Pennz 20/50W. This is without a doubt the best car I or my family has ever owned and there were others while I drove my 300E. I know I'm in the wrong forum, but I thought you should know there are more good than bad. I won't feel overlooked if no one replies, I'll understand. I wish all of you complainers had the joy I've had for 12 years. God Bless You and Yours,Don!!!

Problem: Problem 1.I bought this car for S$108,000. Its $200,000 new! Immediately found out that car was loosing 1 litre of coolant each day. Brought it to the mechanic who did a top overhaul and discovered that the cylinder head surfaces were corroded. This causes water to seep into X-section where it evaporates. Problem 2, After a year, discovered light brownish greasy substance in coolant expansion tank. Mechanic once again removed the cylinder head and discovered that the gasket had been burnt /damaged causing engine oil to flow into coolant channels. Am monitoring for another year and if it happens again , its going to be goodbye to the Mercz.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Problem 1- Rewelded the cylinder head and installed new gasket . Problem 2- Changed cylinder head gasket. Holding my breath for now. Billings for the above issues were S$3000 in total. Do let me know your comments to my above issues.

Problem: I am writing this for owners who have had the same problem. At around 100,000 miles, the head gasket blows on the in-line six cylinder engine in the 300E. I found out from my MB mechanic that this is relatively common, but is not covered under the warranty (too many miles). When the head gasket blows, oil is pushed into the coolant recovery bottle and floats on top as a brownish slime. This is how the problem is diagnosed. The only solution is to have the head gasket replaced ($900-$1,500 USD dependinbg upon geographic area). If you maintain your MB according to the maintenance schedule, this should not happen!!! Be advised, that when the head gasket breaks, the oil that seeps into the coolant system eventually destroys the seals in the water pump. This generally occurs immediately to about 10,000 miles after fixing the head gasket and costs about $800-$1,000 USD to repair!!!
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: I had to pay for both the head gasket to be repaired by an independent MB mechanic and the water pump replaced at an MB dealership. BEWARE.

Problem: My father has a mercedes 300E that would just randomly shut off while driving. This has happened 4 times in the last 5 years that he has owned the car. After inspection by mercedes (4 times) they have concluded that there is a hole in the engine (near the pistons?) and have told him he will be needing another engine. About $12,000. That's outrageous since the car only has about 60K on it.

Problem: Car would stall at stoplights when braking, idling, and also accelerating. Engine would cut out momentarily when traveling on the interstate. At times occurring in busy traffic resulting in dangerous situations. The car has over 50K and the problem has occurred intermittently since one year after buying the car new. At first the dealer said to burn only Amoco Silver instead of premium. The reasoning being some "evaporation" ratio that may be affecting the engine. It seems that here in NC the oil companies change their formulas during the year based on seasonal temperature and EPA emission alerts. Some local metro areas are required to sell only emmission/ozone reducing gas in the winter - causes engines to run rough. Any way, this problem occurred mostly during warm/hot humid conditions, usually after the car had been driven, parked for an hour, and started up again. Took the car to two different dealers. The changed/ adjusted I don't know what all, but they could not determine the cause, and thus could not fix it.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Maybe. Maybe. The regional MBUSA rep was called in at 36K when the warranty was about to expire and another attempt to solve the problem had just been attempted. I told him that I expected MBUSA to continue to cover any expense related to this problem if it reoccurred. He and the dealers service mgr. Both gave me their verbal assurance but neither would put anything in writing. This spring the problem started up again. I called MBUSA and they forwarded my message to the regional MBUSA rep. He contacted the local dealer and when I showed up there to complain. They had a new part waiting for me. It's called a "wiring harness". It's the wires running from the engine to the ignition, computer, and other electric controls. This was an all day job that MBUSA covered. No charge to me. It has been a week and so far no problems. In fact I think the car is running better. They should have done this 4-5 years ago instead of jerking me around! The service mgr. showed me the old harness where he had cut open the rubber insulation. The plastic insulation around several of the wires was dry, cracked, and brittle. This harness sits directly on the top of the engine head - lots of heat. The service rep. said they had seen the same thing on a few other cars (then why not fix it sooner?). I think MB and their dealers know they have a problem, but will do anything to avoid an all day warranty job - including ticking off a second time owner who told them I would never buy another MB! We'll see how it goes - so far so good. If not, that's it! I'm trading on a Lexus reliability and customer service is the best based on all the owners I've talked to. I really hate to see MB have such poor CS. When the car is working fine I wouldn't drive anything else, but there is no excuse for poor CS for this kind of money.

Problem: Purchased car in 1997 with 102,000 miles on it. Had it checked out before purchase but six months later has had nothing but problems with it. Over the past year maintaince was real expensive. Excessive oil use. Car was burning lots of oil. Had to replace oil at least once a week. Used about 5 to 7 quarts a month with very little driving. Oil leaks. Transmisson was defective needed minor work two years. Vaacum leaks(?) in car. On the way (3-12-2000) to the dealer to have 150,000 service done and to possibly trade it; both the engine and the transmission blew at the same time. Talk about bad luck and bad timing. Problem: Purchased vehicle in January 1997 from STAR MOTORS in Houston, TX with 73,988 miles. All maintenance on or before schedule. In June 2000 on a trip the engine blew sending parts through the oil pan and engine block. Had the car towed back to Houston to find the source of the problem. Contacted Mercedes to find what recalls or known recurring problems. They were no help. Upon finding this site we find this problem is common among this model and Mercedes has chosen not to address it. Since the car is out of warranty the next move is to start some sort of legal action for this known problem they refuse to assist on a known product defect. I also own a '84 300 SD that currently has 207,000 miles on it with no major problems. Both cars have been maintained by the book. Mercedes quality has fallen off immmensely from the 84 300SD to the 92 300 SD that the engine only lasts for barely 100,000 miles.

Problem: I have purchased the car with 110,000 miles. Since, the car was driving extremely sluggish and the transmission was not shifting properly, before purchasing it, I took it to another authorized MB dealer. I was assured that the car is sound and the problems are a question of adjustments and replacing the engine electrical harness. Based on this and on the Mercedes reputation, I made a huge mistake and bought it. The car is nothing but problem ever since. Lack of power, excessive oil use (approx 2Qt/ 300miles), excessive engine noise, problem with shifting down into 3rd or up into 3rd when the car is already moving. Constant problems with the electrical and the vacuum system, even the sound system. At 119,000 miles I took it to a dealer again. They made some adjustments on the engine and the turbo unit. While the mechanic took it out to a test drive the engine blew up on him. It appears that the connecting rod in cylinder #1 knocked out a palm size hole in the side of the engine. One wrist-pin was actually found underneath the car. A total loss of the engine block and probably a total loss of the entire car. According to the dealer the cost of the repair would be over $14,000.00 which is the approximate trade in value of the entire car, if it is in an acceptable condition. This car was properly maintained but this shouldn’t happen to any engine if it was “engineered like no other car in the world”. I would gladly join in a class action suit.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Both the mechanic and service representative of the dealer felt that MB should at least provide the parts for the repair. In fact, MB, so far, is refusing to even contribute to the repair. Reason given: warranty way past, also that cause could be lack of adequate maintenance.

Resolution: Dealer has found a bent rod on piston #1, small cracks in the head, and after putting it all back together, discovered that the turbo was spraying oil. Suspect that the turbo is leaking oil in all these cars and that the oil gets into the cylinder where it is not compressable. So, when there is a puddle of oil in a cylinder and the engine tries to start, the only thing that can give is the rod. I have been without my car for 5 weeks now and it looks like another week before I'll get it back. We'll see how MB deals with this

It has never been run hard. Never had any other problems in 93,000 miles. I don't believe that the valve spring should have failed at that mileage. Valve springs are designed to withstand so many cycles of opening and closing. Mercedes must be designing them to last longer than 93,000 miles but I haven't been able to determine what that is. I have talked to the regional factory service rep in Monvale NJ and although he is very friendly an cooperative could not offer me any relief from this high cost of repair. It must have been due to a manufacturing deficiency and Mercedes should have borne some of the cost to correct the problem. This is the third Mercedes I've owned. Resolution: This car is a LEMON. Bought it with 30k and now only has 54k and is immaculate, but you can't tell a book by its cover! Have had many before and luckily I know of rebuilders at half the price of a dealer for repairing this junk. Car was hurried to market in 92 and it shows. No wonder there was a class action suit on the suspension. I've got a 88 300CE with 168k with less problems! Resolved the problems permanently by selling the XX. Good riddance!

Model: 300SE Year: 1992 VIN: n/a
Problem: I recently fell in love with the new W140 Mercedes. I couldn't resist buying one, and settled on a 1992 300SE. It had 90,000 miles on it at purchase, and is a beautiful car. As a 22-year-old, I have owned 4 Mercedes cars (all diesels). This was my first experience with a gasoline Benz. I never had any trouble with my diesels (2 1981 300SDs, 1 1983 300SD, and a 1987 300SDL). All of my diesels had 200K+ miles on them at trade-in, and I was very impressed. I expected to own this W140 car for a long time, but now I'm not so sure. This car is nowhere near the car that the older ones are. When you shut the door, the wood trim comes loose, the spark plug wires are too close together, causing old wires to arc amongst themselves, thus causing the car to skip, the famous shimmy is there, even with new tires, new steering damper, tire balance, and alignment, The car squeaks and rattles on the inside, as if something is going to fall off any moment. I am very disheartened over this whole ordeal. At one time thought I would always drive Mercedes cars because of their quality and reliability. Now, I see that no "good" cars were produced after 1987 or so, and I have no choices other than drive old cars or change makes. At 22 years old, I wonder what I'll have a choice of by the time I'm 80? Will there be any of the "good" cars still left? These W140s definitely won't be taking up any room on the highway, for sure

Problem: I recently purchased a 1992 Mercedes 300SE (W140 body). The car developed a skip shortly after I purchased it, so I returned it to the dealer where I purchased it. It was determined that the spark plug wires were the culprit. The wires were ordered and received a few days later. As it turns out, we received the wrong wires. This scenario was repeated three more times, and still the wrong wires. Finally, I called the parts department with my problem. They informed me that replacement spark plug wire sets are not available for this car. What?? Yeah, that's right. No wires are available FROM THE DEALER!! That is absolutely absurd! I realize this isn't a new car, but my God, a 1992 isn't THAT old! I am in utter amazement. You can go to the local Ford dealer and buy wires for any Ford product, but not a Mercedes?? The parts guy said he could sell wires by the foot, I could cut them and use my own ends. That's ridiculous. Customer service my ass.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: The parts guy is supposed to call me with a phone number of an aftermarket source for the wires.

Problem: I have purchased this car from Birmingham Alabama , it is a nice one and i do not have any technical complains on it , I drove it north to my home city in Canada on the east coast ( Halifax ) . When i wanted to register it with the motor vehichle department , i was told that this car is not safe and it does not comply with the Canadian saftey standards of bumber and electrical system . I offered to make all the changes to it as per their requirements , but they said that there are certain changes regarding the structure of the car body that nobody can make ,although it complies with all the Federal USA regulations of saftey and all other requirements, they are forcing me to deport it back to the USA. I looked for assistance from the main dealer in Toronto , but they repeated what the motor V. said . and they were so negative to the extent that they stopped replaying to my e-mail after the second one . I like the car , and i want to keep it , but i want to be sure at the end that i am and i have been driving a safe car for the last 7 years , since i always had an S Class Mercedes . Who ever can assest on this situation please call or mail. At present the car is in Canada on a temporary permit till the 15th of May 2000 . The thing which made it worse for me is that i can see many cars similar to mine on the streets of my city , and i cannot get an answer or an explanation to this situation .

Problem: Great page for a great cause. This is an old story..but still..My 72 is equipped with load leveling air bags under the car which fill up to level the car when it is started(this was only availiable in the early 70s I think). In 1976 I took my car in for service becuase it was riding slightly to the left. It was taken to a well respected Mercedes dealership in Daytona Beach FL. At the time they were very busy but assured me that the car would get a complete inspection. The meachanic returned saying I needed all new tires which would cost over $300. Since my tires were worn I agreed. Later in the week my family was in the car on the freeway going about 65 mph. The left air bag blew which sent the car into a skid across 4 lanes and into the emergency lane. The car was towed to a Benz dealer who said the support bag had numerous cracks in it, but would have only cost about $30 to fix. This had to be obvious to the Daytona Beach dealer, but apparently he did a lax inspection, and wanted the max amount of money out of me he could. He could have cost my families lives and thats unacceptable for such a "pristine" dealership.

Problem: recently have aquired a very good example of this model and fortunately haven't any problems now, but to avoid any in the future, especially the complicated air suspension system; I have asked this question many times to "experts" but still am confused. the last owner parked the car in the secound position of the suspension system to block the air due to the time the vehicle was not used to insure less fault to the system, but another will say the contrary and keep the position in normal. I find if that is the case after many days, sometimes weeks, the vehicle takes forever to rise to it's driving position (which according to the manuel is normal) obviously a new car is driven daily, but when owned as a calssic for the sunday drives, it could make sense to put it in the secound position ? Problem: This site was recommended to my by a long time friend, so so good! I'd first like to say that this is the most satisfying car I've ever owned. However, there seems to be a weak-link in the air-filter mounts and/or brackets. Every 15,000 miles this car reportedly needs new mounts, or brackets. Is this an abnormailty? The dealer doesn't seem to think so. The engine mounts check out to be okay, and the engine doesn't vibrate any more than is expected from a turbo diesel with 225,000 original miles. Issue number two, whenever it rains the cargo area (right rear corner) is saturated! Is this due to a worn-out gasket around the tailgate? Any suggestions for either problems??? No dealer complaints about Phil Smart Inc. in Seattle, WA. They have been faithfully serving our family for 20 years. This is one of three Mercedes we presently own, and have always had wonderful experiences with them all - about 15. With the exception of a 1992 300TE 4-Matic.

Problem: I have owned my car since new, March 1991; I drive my car daily and do not bellieve in letting it sit to admire. It now has 122,000 miles registered; it is not driven hard and I take very good care my car, change oil and filter every 2,000 miles, (Shell Rotella), hand wash it myself. Has only two minute dings which are only noticable to me, so you see I do maintain my car. Transmission oil and filter are changed every 20,000 miles. Now to my main problem, vacum lines are too skimpy and work themselves loose and have had my car in twice in the past year to have this problem solved. By having such short vacum hoses this causes problems with the transmission shifting properly. I've had problems with my AC sensor; a $20.00 hot and cold sensor would have solved the problem, but I had to purchase a $350.00 unit to correct the problem. I've had several sets of glow plugs, they just don't last. The sensor on my brakes has never worked. When the wheel bearings were repacked I found that they were Japanese in this fine German vehicle. This is my 5th Mercedes and I will not be buying another one. I'm thinking along the lines of the number 1 car on the market today, a Toyota Cambry. However, I intend to drive this one to the bone yard.

Problem: At 120,000km my mercedes started to wander as if steered by the rear wheels. The dealer suggested new tires. After installing new Continentals the problem persisted and now I find out from an independent garage that worn rear suspension components are the cause. Plus all 4 wheel bearings had to be replaced totalling $1400. And lots of other niggling problems you just don't expect on a car that costs this much. For me the Mercedes mystique is long gone. Other makes are just as safe, handle better, are more reliable and cost much less. All you're paying for is the name and a reputation that is history. I would not buy another and I won't miss mine when I sell it.

Problem: I've had this car for about 8 years, and it's been mostly totally reliable, altho in the first year all the usual things needed to be replaced (water pump, AC compressor). But unexpectedly, a band in the tranny failed, and it had to be rebuilt($2500). Since the car had only 50K miles on it I felt that Mercedes should at least look at the band, which to my engineer's eye had an obvious casting flaw in it. Despite repeated tries, I could never get the arrogant SOB's at MBUSA to even take a look. They sent me several letter in which they indicated a total lack of interest in the part or the problem. Since then, I've always had my car serviced at indy MBZ shops, since I assumed that MBZ dealers would be as arrogant as their US headquarters proved to be. These shops (European Motor Cars in Redwood City (Otto Richter), and Holland Motors in Burlingame) have done really well by me and I recommend either of them without reservation.

Problem: At 60K miles (1995) my single row timeing chain came off. Up until that point I had not had any problems with the car and serviced it religiously at the dealership. A week later I read in a Motor Mag that the 81 - 83 SL models had single row timing chains that have a tendancy to come off and should be replace with 2 row. Why Mercedes did not notify me I will never understand. $4K later I had a new 2 row chain with all the damage repaired. As a result of having the dealer (located in SLC, UT)fix that problem (they had to take the engine apart)I have been chasing various problems with the engiine for almost three years. Thousands of dollars later I am at the last and most frustrating problem. The engine keeps running rough and stalling in very heavy rain or after it is run through a car wash. I have had it into the dealer over 6 times specifically to try to find and fix only this problem. They gave it back 6 times with no resolution (they did not even take it to the car waash next door to try to replicate the problem as I had suggested). Out of desperation I finally took the car to a non Mercedes repair shop (Daves Import Auto Repair in Centerville, UT). They nailed the problem on the first try within 20 min. Turns out the injector and manifold(?)gaskets were bad and are leaking badly (water in and presure out). I asked Dave about whether or not the gaskets were even replaced when the origional work was done on the engine. He declined to say but it sure makes me wonder. The car has less than 10K miles on it since the repair. The end result is that I will NEVER go back to the dealership again FOR ANYTHING. The service at the non Mercedes dealership is head and shoulders above. It is nice to finally get the dependable car back that I remember.

A different dealer told me verbally that our model was a double sprocket model and not to worry. Turns out the rattle may have been due to old or defective components on the cam chain. Result, a catastrophic failure and a $6,000 plus repair. The dealer did a shoddy job of repairing it and I had to take it back to get it right. Problem: Man, Have I got a story. Bought a nice really clean S class sedan. Always really liked the larger sedans .To me these are what M/B cars are all about. Silver silver finish leather interior etc. I took my (3) children in this car to California this summer for two weeks. Other than blowing a tire in Baker Calif on the way back and loosing the fan blower motor in Las Vegas on the way down. A nice 700.00 USD. touch at Fletcher Jones, The car worked great. Problems started directly after I had the tire blow out a V rated Michelin no less. Started getting intermitent display of ABS failure and the SRS light would come on for no reason illuminate for 10-25 seconds then out. Now the ABS would pulsate when the car was cold, at very low speed like to slow for a speed bump. Once warmed no problem. On the trip back to Canada the instrument lights were begining to act up Brake Failure/ABS/ SRS take your pick. All would come on at odd times. Now I can undo the cars windows from the centre consol but not raise the drivers rear one. Only from the door, switch. Call my mercedes tech who tells me sounds like a short in the wiring or perhaps a sensor has gone. Also now the door marker lights are not working. As I am typing this out it seems to be so clear to me in retrospec. Anyways The car gets us all safe and sound back to Canada. The nightmare begins. I take the car in to the repair shop because now I have a burning smell coming from some where in the cabin. The lights are now totally possessed, interiors flashing when they choose to. I have a real problem. Turns out the marker lights have shorted out frying and burning, yes burning the wiring harness back to the main board. (From the Drivers back door) Because of the way M/B wires the cars in the big garden hose of wires twisted and running of the floor this caused the others in the same cluster to melt and cause a massive meltdown. I am not a happy camper. Turns out the short is caused by the wires (Red and whites of the marker lights) rubbing on the underside of the carpet backing. The carpeting has a metal backing in certain areas I would think for a better fit?.I really don't know. Anyways this has caused me no end of grief as my car is in the shop for the third week. This has happened before I am sure to other people. Of that I am positive, as M/B has a replacement part for the wireing harness avalible for the drivers rear door back. This is a nightmare. Thank God nothing happened on our road trip to LA. Mercedes here say's not ther problem insurance says can you believ this .Because I stopped the car for bursting into flames it is not covered. Had I let it short out and burn (flames) it would be. Love that pretzel logic. Anyways M/B recommends a complete wiring harness renewal. Thats like 40 hours min. With the whole interior of the car dis-assembeled. Nice hand built Mercedes Benz. The M/B rep says this never happens. I think that is a load of crap. It's a design flaw. When your marker lights fail to work and your trunk will not illumiate when open its a sign ther wire's have been servered or are broken by the door opening forcing the harness to bend etc. There is no reason ever for wires to meltdown in the interior of a car . Ever. The metal backing on the carpeting caused this problem I would think others would have had similar problems,I hope for their sakes it won't be as expensive. Meanwhile my old Volvo that has been around the world still plugs along.
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: Complete wiring replacement, series of legal letters to Mb and my insurance co. The ABS problem has been traced to the main sending unit a broken wire clean and simple.

Problem: Timing chain broke at 42,000 miles, bending valves and breaking the chain guide and the valve cover
Problem Resolved: No
Resolution: I purchased this car in 1990 from my neighbor. At this time the car had 3000 miles on it and already had 3 oil changes. Since my purchase I've been aggressive in the maintenance of the car yet inspite of all the maintenance the timing chain broke. I believe that Mercedes-Benz should "stand tall" in this low mileage situation and offer to HELP fix this problem. Our dealership in Saginaw, MI closed and now I take the car to Lansing, MI for service at Williams. I asked Williams to contact the regional Mercedes representative, which they did. The regional rep. did not see fit to support the product or its service. I called the 800 number and was told that all they do is take the word of the regional rep. I believe I would have gotten better support with the representative had it been my local dealer. I've taken car of the car promptly using all the guides that Mercedes gives. I would like the company to help with this prolem by either supplying parts, labour or both. The Vin number can be achieve by calling the dealorship in Lansing, MI.

Problem: I bought this vehicle two years ago used with 92000 miles. It is a beautiful automobile but so expensive to maintain. I've had no extraordinary problems...yet. But for some reason I feel like there may be problems lurking under the surface. I would not buy another mercedes benz under any circumstances. I'm very serious about selling the car and going with a japanese luxury model primarily for the reliability.
